Background

Rachel brings over twenty years of experience to all areas of domestic practice including divorce, child custody and support, spousal support, equitable division of marital assets and debts, legitimation, paternity, and prenuptial/postnuptial agreements. Rachel manages complex family law litigation, which often requires the coordination of experts in business valuation, asset tracing, separate property interests, dissipation of marital assets, child custody, alcohol and drug evaluation, co-parenting, and computer forensics. Divorce litigation often requires a team of support for the client, and Rachel takes pride in building your team and ensuring it operates smoothly.

A 2002 honors graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law, Rachel’s early practice was with the large regional law firm of Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough, LLP, where she was a member of the commercial and business litigation team, but also had the unique opportunity to work for a partner who had developed a niche practice in high asset family law matters. Once she was introduced to domestic practice, it became clear that her calling was to serve individual clients in more personal matters. In 2007, Rachel followed that calling and joined one of the leading family law practices in Atlanta. Since that time, she has focused her practice entirely on family law, where she has experienced great personal and professional satisfaction supporting clients through what will often be the most trying journey and transition of their lives. Rachel works with each individual person to craft a path forward that suits their specific needs. No two cases are alike, because no two people are alike. But in each and every case, Rachel works tirelessly to advance her clients’ articulated goals and to position them for success – emotionally and financially – in their next phase of life.

Testimonials

Sharp, experienced and exceptional
Rachel is an incredibly sharp, experienced and exceptional attorney. Divorce is a very personal, individualized experience and often an incredibly trying time. Rachel‘s ability to guide her clients through all facets of the process with a deep understanding and consideration of their individual needs, concerns, and fears is an absolute gift. The divorce process for some of us is a roller coaster, filled with unpredictable twists and turns and often times, clouded by emotional ups and downs. The legal system itself doesn’t seem to “help” us find a more straightforward and collaborative way, especially when custody issues are involved. Rachel fights hard for her clients in all of the right ways, and provides such a healthy, logical perspective on what issues simply aren’t worth it. She is strategic, thoughtful, empathetic, collaborative and when needed, a shrewd negotiator to the counterparty. Throughout it all, she strikes the perfect balance of embracing your emotional needs, tenaciously pursuing your desired outcome and also pushing you to compromise when its in the best interest of you and your children. I never imagined myself going through a divorce and I was initially devastated by the circumstances that brought me to Rachel‘s office. I started my journey fearful of the outcomes that lay ahead for myself, my future relationship with my prior spouse and most importantly, our young children. Because of Rachel, I knew I had someone by my side to help me find strength, balance and perspective. She is a stellar attorney and fully invests herself in her clients’ wellbeing. She understood my needs, empowered me to make the right choices and ultimately led me on a path that prioritized our children and the best possible outcome for our family.

Breath of Fresh Air
So, if you are reading this, you have already made the first step to make a horrible situation better. Let’s face it, none of us ever wants to have to employ an attorney. We were recommended to Rachel through an acquaintance that heard of our situation. He insisted we could not get anyone better than her to represent us and he was right. From the beginning she set expectations and began to help us resolve our ongoing custody battle. We had hired two attorneys previously who did not seem interested in a resolution but a continued pay day from us. In both instances, it was overly costly and the results were not what we had hoped. Rachel was a huge blessing to our blended family. She fought for us when it was needed- which was often as the other party loved playing games throughout the process. Rachel was calm and diligent to get it all resolved so that we would not have to do this again. Her pricing was fair and she did not fluff her hours. After our previous experiences, she was such a breathe of fresh air. Her confidence and ability to deliver was outstanding. She set realistic expectations. when it started getting rough, she got in the trenches and went to battle for us. I would and have recommended her to SO many people. They have thanked us profusely for connecting them with her. You will not be disappointed.
Grateful for Rachel.

Prevailing when it Mattered Most
During one of the most difficult and emotionally wrenching times of our life, Rachel Shockley was one of the most caring and skilled professionals we encountered. Her expertise as a family law attorney is top-notch. She helped and supported my family through a series of difficult child custody hearings, prevailing when it mattered most. Rachel really does put the interest of the child first, and works to encourage positive and cooperative co-parenting. Litigation is not her first response when other strategies can be more effective, however when she has to litigate she is one of the most thoroughly prepared attorneys I have ever worked with, personally or professionally, and she’s the one you want on your side. She is professional yet tough, and was dogged in her representation on both the letter and spirit of the law. As important, Rachel was a responsible steward of my family’s emotional wellbeing. Family law is difficult and having someone who cares about you and your family is key to managing the stress. I highly recommend Rachel to anyone in need of expert legal counsel for his or her family.

Essence of Professionalism
I highly recommend Collard Shockley for family law needs. Rachel Shockley represents the essence of professionalism while showing kindness and compassion. Over the course of my two-year litigation matter, Rachel provided exceptional legal advice and remained a constant source of support while navigating a very difficult county court system. Rachel fought tireless for me and my son and never.gave.up. Whatever it took to get the job done, Rachel did it. She found ways to minimize cost and worked very hard to settle my case. We faced some challenging circumstances that were non-negotiables for me – We had to win. Period. Rachel always factored those non-negotiables into her thought processes and advice. She never once advised to back down in order to take an easier way out. We fought and we won! Knowing there was inherit risk on certain case matters, Rachel would promptly and properly advise me of those risks then said on one matter, “I’ll stand with you.” That one statement summarizes the entire litigation. Rachel stood with me and never backed down. My son and I are eternally grateful for her and the entire firm of Collard Shockley.
